David Canterbury is a renowned survivalist, author, and television personality, who has a wealth of knowledge and experience in bushcraft and survival techniques (check out his awesome YouTube channel, website, and books on bushcrafting). He has spent much of his life in the wilderness, honing his skills and developing new techniques for survival in a variety of environments. Here are some SHTF survival lessons that can be learned from David Canterbury:
- Prioritize shelter and warmth: In any survival situation, the first priority should be to find or create a shelter to protect yourself from the elements. According to Canterbury, it's important to focus on creating a shelter that provides both warmth and protection from the wind, rain, and snow.
- Master fire starting techniques: Fire is essential for warmth, cooking, and signaling for help. Canterbury recommends mastering multiple fire starting techniques, including using a ferrocerium rod, bow drill, and flint and steel.
- Learn to purify water: Clean drinking water is critical for survival, and in a SHTF scenario, you may not have access to clean water sources. Canterbury suggests carrying a water filter, purification tablets, or a small pot for boiling water.
- Develop wilderness navigation skills: Getting lost in the wilderness can be dangerous, especially in a survival situation. Canterbury recommends carrying a map and compass and learning how to use them to navigate your surroundings.
- Focus on finding food: In a long-term survival situation, finding food is essential. Canterbury recommends learning how to identify edible plants and animals in your area, as well as setting traps and snares to catch game.
- Have a well-stocked survival kit: Canterbury stresses the importance of having a well-stocked survival kit, which should include items like a knife, shelter materials, fire-starting tools, water purification methods, and first aid supplies.
- Practice mental toughness (see my article on SHTF Lessons in Mental Toughness From the Spartans): Surviving in a SHTF situation requires mental toughness and resilience. Canterbury suggests practicing mindfulness and visualization techniques to stay calm and focused in high-stress situations.
Overall, David Canterbury's approach to survival emphasizes the importance of mastering basic bushcraft skills and being prepared with the right tools and mindset to survive in any situation.
